Theme Analysis

The philosophical teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently direct human inquiry toward the ultimate origin of existence and the root of our current condition. While materialistic scientists and speculators attribute the cosmic manifestation to chance or secondary material nature, the actual truth is that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the primeval cause of all causes. On a personal level, the root of all miseries and the hard struggle for life is the conditioned soul's forgetfulness of its eternal relationship with the Lord. Realizing this ultimate cause through the association of devotees and the process of devotional service is the true science of religion.

  • The Primeval Cause of Creation: The material energy (māyā) acts merely as the immediate instrument of the cosmic manifestation, whereas the Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa is the original, primeval cause of everything (janmādy asya yataḥ).
  • The Illusion of Secular Speculation: Atheistic philosophers, scientists, and demoniac speculators remain in constant darkness because they foolishly attribute the highly organized cosmic creation to random chance rather than investigating the real cause.
  • The Origin of Material Suffering: Although people superficially blame external circumstances for their distress, the real cause of suffering is one's own fruitive activities and complete forgetfulness of their eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord.
  • The Solution Through Devotional Service: Awakening from this forgetfulness requires engaging in the real cause of spiritual growth, which is associating with pure devotees and continually watering the creeper of devotion by hearing and chanting.
