Theme Analysis

Srila Prabhupada presents submission not as a choice but as an inevitability. The living entity, being a tiny part of the Supreme, is constitutionally subordinate. We must submit to something: either to the benevolent will of Krsna or to the harsh dictates of the material energy (maya). There is no position of absolute independence.

This theme explores the necessity of submission in various dimensions. Spiritually, one must submit to a bona fide guru and the Lord to receive knowledge and mercy. Materially, everyone is forced to submit to the laws of nature, old age, and death—even powerful leaders who think themselves supreme. Srila Prabhupada argues that true intelligence lies in voluntary submission to the Supreme Authority, which frees one from the forced, miserable submission to the laws of karma.

  • Voluntary vs. Forced: We can submit to Krsna voluntarily and be happy, or be forced to submit to maya and suffer.
  • Submission to Guru: One must find a perfect person to submit to; otherwise, spiritual life is impossible.
  • The Law of Nature: Even the greatest materialists must submit to death and disease; no one can defy nature's laws.
  • Administrative Discipline: In a society, submission to authority and proper reporting (submitting accounts, proposals) is essential for order.
  • The Plea of the Soul: Great devotees like Sanatana Gosvami teach us how to submit our heartfelt pleas to the Lord for deliverance.
