Theme Analysis

The foundation of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is built upon the reciprocal, loving relationship between the spiritual master and his sincere followers. Throughout his letters and addresses, Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently expressed deep gratitude and indebtedness to his disciples for sacrificing their lives to help him execute the mission of his guru. Recognizing his advancing age, he consciously and carefully began transferring the immense responsibilities of temple management and global preaching over to them. He urged his followers to avoid personal ambition, to cooperate conjointly without creating fractures in the society, and to aggressively push forward the saṅkīrtana movement while strictly maintaining the core practices of chanting and following regulative principles.

  • A Bond of Mutual Gratitude: The spiritual master felt profoundly obliged and indebted to the young men and women who assisted him, viewing their service as a genuine expression of love.
  • The Future Hope of the World: Handing down the teachings through the paramparā, the spiritual master entrusted the future of the global spiritual awakening to his dedicated Western followers.
  • Assuming Management Responsibilities: To free himself to focus on translating vital Vedic literatures, it was essential for senior disciples to take up the heavy burden of managing the worldwide society.
  • The Necessity of Absolute Unity: Personal ambition and internal fractures are the greatest threats to the mission; thus, working conjointly in a cooperative spirit is strictly required for success.
  • Maintaining the Strict Spiritual Standard: Future responsibilities can only be properly executed if the disciples remain tightly fixed in their daily practices, chanting sixteen rounds and following the four basic restrictions.
