Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the fighting spirit is not an artificial or purely material invention; it exists within the living entities because it originally exists within the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because we are minute parts and parcels of Lord Kṛṣṇa, we possess all His qualities, including the martial spirit. However, in the spiritual world of Vaikuṇṭha, everyone is fully surrendered in love, meaning there is absolutely no possibility of conflict. Therefore, when Kṛṣṇa desires to enjoy the pleasure pastime of mock fighting, He arranges for His highly elevated, confidential devotees—such as Jaya and Vijaya—to descend to the material world and play the role of His enemies. Furthermore, Kṛṣṇa inspires His devotees in the material world, like Arjuna, to utilize their fighting spirit not for personal sense gratification, but purely for the satisfaction of the Lord and the reestablishment of religious principles.
