Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the profound mechanism of free will regarding the living entity's desire to remember or forget the Supreme Lord. Because the soul is constitutionally a servant of God, attempting to exist independently in the material world is inherently miserable. When conditioned souls become frustrated with this suffering, they often want to forget their miseries through artificial means like intoxication, sleeping pills, or voidist philosophies. However, the root of all this suffering is the fundamental desire to forget Kṛṣṇa Himself. If a soul rebelliously wants to forget the Lord, Kṛṣṇa, seated in the heart as the Supersoul, perfectly facilitates this desire by supplying the intelligence to remain in the illusion of māyā birth after birth. Conversely, for the pure devotees of Vṛndāvana, forgetting Kṛṣṇa is wonderfully impossible. Even when they playfully want to forget Him, He remains eternally present in their hearts. The ultimate solution to material suffering is not artificial forgetfulness, but reviving one's eternal loving relationship with Kṛṣṇa.

  • Artificial Forgetfulness: Overwhelmed by the unavoidable anxieties of material existence, conditioned souls attempt to forget their suffering through concocted, destructive means like intoxication or sleep, rather than seeking the true spiritual solution.
  • The Lord's Perfect Facilitation: Because Kṛṣṇa never interferes with the minute independence of the living entity, He perfectly facilitates those who wish to forget Him by providing them the intelligence to remain in illusion life after life.
  • The Depths of Atheism: When demoniac persons challenge the existence of God, the Lord supplies them with the exact arguments and intelligence needed to convince themselves that God is dead, ensuring their continued forgetfulness.
  • The Compassion of Devotees: While Kṛṣṇa is strict in fulfilling the desires of those who wish to forget Him, His pure devotees are more compassionate, traveling the world to preach Kṛṣṇa consciousness and reawaken the dormant love of the conditioned souls.
  • The Impossibility of Forgetting Kṛṣṇa: For pure devotees like Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and the residents of Vṛndāvana, Kṛṣṇa is so deeply situated within their hearts that even if they externally claim they want to forget Him, it is absolutely impossible.
