Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the fundamental difference between the material and spiritual worlds lies in the object of one's pleasure. In material life, so-called love is merely the desire to please one's own senses, whereas in spiritual life, the pure devotee's only desire is to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. However, one cannot arbitrarily manufacture ways to please the Lord. Just as an ordinary person is pleased when someone follows their specific request, Kṛṣṇa is pleased when we follow His instructions submissively through the guidance of the spiritual master. The ultimate instruction of the Lord is to spread His glories; therefore, actively preaching and spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the most effective way to please Him. When a devotee fully dedicates his life to pleasing Kṛṣṇa, abandoning all mundane attachments, the Lord perfectly reciprocates. Because Kṛṣṇa is bhakta-vatsala, He is equally eager to please His pure devotees, even going so far as to break His own promises to uphold the word of His servant.

  • The Illusion of Material Love: In the material world, relationships are based on self-interest, with everyone ultimately wanting to please their own senses rather than genuinely pleasing the beloved.
  • The Pure Devotee's Sole Desire: A pure Vaiṣṇava abandons all desires for heavenly elevation or material profit, focusing his entire existence on wanting to please the Supreme Lord.
  • Following Authorized Instructions: One cannot manufacture whimsical methods of service; to please God and the spiritual master, one must submissively ask for direction and execute their specific orders.
  • The Supreme Pleasure of Preaching: The most direct and powerful way to please Kṛṣṇa in this age is to distribute His message, spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and invite others to chant the holy names.
  • Divine Reciprocation: The relationship between the Lord and His devotee is reciprocal; just as the gopīs danced simply to please Kṛṣṇa, the Lord readily assumes different features and even breaks His own rules to please His devotees.
