Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the severe calamities of material existence—such as war, pestilence, famine, and earthquakes—are not random accidents but precise reactions orchestrated by the laws of material nature. When human society becomes overly materialistic, sinful, and deeply engaged in unrestricted sense gratification, the world becomes heavily overburdened. To restore balance, the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not need to personally descend; instead, He sets the natural forces into motion. This cosmic purging mechanism clears out the demonic and undesirable elements who unnecessarily disturb the world situation. The mass slaughter of innocent animals, especially mother cows, generates massive collective karma that completely pollutes the global atmosphere, guaranteeing the outbreak of these devastating disasters. While arrogant politicians and atheistic leaders try to solve these problems through economic development and diplomacy, they are repeatedly frustrated. Nature's strict laws cannot be checked by any government. Ultimately, when kāla (the time factor representing death) manifests as war and epidemic, even the proudest atheists are forced to submissively acknowledge a higher power. The only true relief from this cycle of catastrophic misery is to abandon sinful life and take shelter of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
