Theme Analysis

The foundation of spiritual life is to always remember Kṛṣṇa and never forget Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly urged his disciples to keep this essential instruction at the forefront of their consciousness. To always remember Kṛṣṇa means to continually chant His holy name, follow the regulative principles without deviation, and execute the instructions of the spiritual master. Because the material world is the kingdom of māyā, danger is present at every step, and forgetfulness is a constant threat. Therefore, a devotee must deliberately practice remembering the Lord throughout their life so that they can pass the ultimate test at the time of death and successfully return back to Godhead.

  • Always Remember Kṛṣṇa: The goal of all spiritual activity—whether living in a temple or working outside—is to keep the mind fixed on Kṛṣṇa. Chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra is the easiest and most practical method to ensure constant remembrance.
  • The Final Examination at Death: A lifetime of spiritual practice culminates at the moment of death. If a devotee can remember Kṛṣṇa or Nārāyaṇa at this critical juncture, their life is completely successful, and they are immediately transferred to the spiritual world.
  • Remembering the Danger of Māyā: The material world is an uncomfortable place ruled by the illusory energy. Devotees must always remember that they are in enemy territory and that staying in the light of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the only protection from the darkness of māyā.
  • Remembering the Spiritual Master: Physical separation from the spiritual master is conquered through memory. By constantly remembering and following his humble teachings, a disciple remains eternally associated with him on the spiritual platform.
  • Remembering Spiritual Vows: Initiation is not a cheap ritual; it is a serious commitment. Devotees must always remember to strictly follow the four regulative principles and chant sixteen rounds of japa daily to maintain their spiritual strength.
