Theme Analysis

The driving motivation of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is entirely transcendental. Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly defined exactly what the society wants: to revive everyone's eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa and provide the ultimate solution to the miseries of material life. The movement does not seek mere numerical strength or superficial religious conversions, nor does it want its members to become inactive, reclusive babājīs. Instead, Śrīla Prabhupāda wanted hundreds and thousands of active, sincere preachers to distribute transcendental literature like the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam to every corner of the globe. By engaging all natural instincts and talents in the center of Kṛṣṇa's service, the movement seeks to bring about real world peace and universal happiness (sarve sukhino bhavantu).

  • The Ultimate Spiritual Goal: The highest ambition of a devotee is not to attain heavenly planets or merge into the impersonal Brahman. The only true desire is to attain Kṛṣṇa, serve Him eternally, and permanently end material existence.
  • Wanting Sincere Preachers: The movement does not want professional priests or lazy individuals. It requires thousands of dedicated, fearless men and women willing to sacrifice their lives to actively preach the science of God consciousness worldwide.
  • Distributing Knowledge: Śrīla Prabhupāda deeply wanted his books translated and distributed globally. A key measure of the preaching's success is ensuring that every home, student, and leader possesses copies of the society's literature.
  • Real Happiness for Everyone: Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the ultimate welfare work. The movement wants nothing less than the supreme benefit for all living entities, striving for true, spiritual communism where everyone is universally happy.
  • Engaging Everything in Service: The material disease is wanting everything without God. The Kṛṣṇa conscious solution is to want everything—music, art, agriculture, and natural instincts—perfectly dovetailed and centered around the pleasure of the Supreme Lord.
