Theme Analysis

The whole universe, in Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings, is simultaneously Kṛṣṇa's domain, His property, His temporary creation, and the arena in which the conditioned soul wanders through countless births searching for a happiness that can only be found beyond its boundaries. The universe is not an independent or self-sustaining phenomenon but is entirely subject to the Supreme Personality of Godhead's creative, maintaining, and dissolving powers. Kṛṣṇa sustains the whole universe by His integrating energy, known as Saṅkarṣaṇa; Lord Viṣṇu encompasses it entirely, extending beyond it by ten fingers' breadth; and Vāmanadeva covered the entire universe in two steps alone. Against the scale of these divine acts, the entire universe is compared to a single mustard seed in a bag full of mustard seeds. Yet this vast material universe is also dark, temporary, and destined for dissolution. The conditioned soul, bound by karma, wanders not only through different species but from planet to planet throughout the whole universe, accumulating birth after birth without resolution. The supreme remedy for this cosmic wandering is the saṅkīrtana movement of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, whose holy name can penetrate the whole universe and fill every planetary system with transcendental vibration, transforming the entire cosmic situation and opening the door of liberation for all living entities.

  • Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Lord and Proprietor of the Whole Universe: The whole universe is Kṛṣṇa's property, creation, and domain. He is the supreme controller, the maintainer, and the ultimate proprietor of all universal planets and all living entities within them. The integrating power of the Supreme Lord, known by the name Saṅkarṣaṇa, maintains the entire universal order, and without His sustaining energy, the whole universe would immediately collapse into disorder.
  • The Whole Universe as Temporary, Dark, and Subject to Dissolution: The material universe is dark, covered by gigantic material elements, and destined for dissolution at the end of its allotted duration. It is compared to a coconut covered by a shell, dense with inner darkness. Even the greatest material civilizations and planetary systems will ultimately be annihilated, and the living entities who have not achieved liberation will face continued transmigration.
  • The Conditioned Soul's Wandering Throughout the Whole Universe: Bound by the reactions of karma and the cycle of birth and death, the conditioned soul wanders throughout the whole universe across countless lifetimes, passing through different species and different planets, searching fruitlessly for permanent happiness in a realm constitutionally incapable of providing it. This cosmic wandering ceases only when the living entity receives the grace of devotional service and achieves liberation.
  • The Power of Saṅkīrtana to Fill the Whole Universe with Love of Godhead: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu came with the specific mission of filling the whole universe with love of Godhead through the saṅkīrtana movement. The tumultuous vibration of the holy name penetrates all fourteen planetary systems, awakening all good fortune throughout the whole universe. The devotees of Lord Caitanya, empowered by his grace, carry the capacity to deliver the whole universe from material entanglement.
