Theme Analysis
The most confidential secrets of Vṛndāvana are found not in the external pastimes of the Lord but within His own heart. These reflections, recorded in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, reveal Kṛṣṇa's own innermost contemplations on the unparalleled position of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī: that despite being the source of all beauty, fragrance, taste, sound, and bliss for the entire creation, He finds Himself captivated, surpassed, and even defeated by Her transcendental attributes. This is the supreme mystery of rasa: the Supreme Lord, who is complete in Himself, discovers in Rādhārāṇī alone the one who can give Him pleasure.
- Rādhārāṇī's Beauty and Attributes Surpass Even Kṛṣṇa's Own: Kṛṣṇa reflects within His heart that although His beauty defeats the beauty of ten million Cupids and gives pleasure to the three worlds, it is the sight of Rādhārāṇī that truly satisfies His eyes. He acknowledges Her as His life and soul, and recognizes that in all of creation there is no one more qualified than She to give Him transcendental pleasure. Her very presence awakens in Kṛṣṇa feelings that He Himself finds contradictory and beyond full comprehension.
- The Transcendental Senses Enchanted by Rādhārāṇī: Though the entire creation is permeated with Kṛṣṇa's beauty, fragrance, and taste, each of these is conquered by Rādhārāṇī's corresponding attributes. The scent of Her limbs captivates His mind and heart, the nectarean taste of Her lips charms Him, and even the sound of the vibration of His own transcendental flute, which attracts the three worlds, is surpassed in His estimation by the sweet words of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
- Kṛṣṇa's Longing to Taste the Joy of Rādhārāṇī: The most astonishing of Kṛṣṇa's contemplations is His confession that He is always eager to taste the joy that Rādhārāṇī derives from His association, yet despite various efforts He has been unable to taste it fully. He perceives its sweetness, His desire for it only increases, and it is this very longing that is understood by the ācāryas as the inner reason for Kṛṣṇa's appearance as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
- The Devotee's Heart and Kṛṣṇa's Heart: Beyond the intimate pastimes of Vṛndāvana, Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the universal principle underlying these confidential truths: the devotees of the Lord are always in the heart of the Lord, and the Lord is always in the hearts of His devotees. This sweet, reciprocal relationship between the Lord and His surrendered servants is the very foundation upon which the highest expressions of bhakti-rasa rest.
