Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that anything disconnected from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is ultimately without value. Whether it is a beautiful body missing the soul, a government led by godless men, mundane literature, or artificial economic systems, all such material things are rendered completely worthless. Furthermore, materialistic pursuits like space travel, mystic powers, or impersonal liberation are exposed as worthless phantasmagoria. True value and eternal meaning can only be found through devotional service to the Lord, and a pure devotee understands that without Kṛṣṇa, everything in the material world is an illusion.

  • The Body Without the Soul: The material body is a complex biological machine, but without the presence of the eternal spirit soul, it is completely worthless, much like an airplane without a pilot.
  • Mundane Goals and Literatures: Literature that does not broadcast the glories of the Lord is useless. Similarly, material ambitions such as traveling to other planets, acquiring mystic powers, or striving for impersonal liberation are considered worthless phantasmagoria by devotees.
  • Degraded Leadership and Society: In Kali-yuga, society is often mismanaged because worthless, lower-class men who lack brahminical culture take up positions of political leadership, causing immense suffering.
  • The Illusion of Material Value: Materialistic society artificially inflates the value of things that are factually useless, such as paper currency unbacked by gold, or granting exalted titles to unqualified, utterly worthless things.
