Theme Analysis
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the three modes of material nature—goodness (sattva), passion (rajas), and ignorance (tamas)—are the forces that bind the eternal soul to the temporary material world. The term "guṇa" essentially means "rope," implying that the living entity is tied down by these modes. Every action performed in the material world is dictated by a specific combination of these modes, forcing the soul to act helplessly while falsely thinking itself the doer. The particular mixture of modes a person associates with determines their behavior, their happiness or distress, and ultimately their next body—whether as a demigod, a human, or an animal. Freedom from this entanglement is impossible by personal endeavor alone; it requires the mercy of the Supreme Lord, who is the controller of the modes. By engaging in unalloyed devotional service, one can transcend these modes and return to the spiritual platform.

- The different kinds of living entities vary according to the modes of material nature, as explained in Bhagavad-gita and other Vedic literature

- The path of bhakti is not at all difficult if we follow in the footsteps of previous acaryas and authorities, but those who are too materially contaminated by the modes of material nature cannot follow them
- The perfect yogi is the sincerest friend of all living entities. He knows that the living being who is conditioned by the modes of material nature is subjected to the 3 fold material miseries due to forgetfulness of his relationship with Krsna. BG 1972 p

- We (sages) know well that persons who have become liberated by engagement in Your devotional service are no longer contaminated by the material modes of nature; thus they have become eligible to be promoted to the kingdom of God in the spiritual world
- We accept as blessings different states of higher life, distinguishing them from lower states of life, but we should know that such distinctions exist only in relation to the interchange of the modes of material nature

- When He (God) personally displays such opulences in the material world, they have no connection with the modes of material nature
- When He (Krsna) descends on the material world by His causeless mercy to different living beings, He does so by His own potency. He is not subject to any condition of the material modes of nature, and He descends as He is originally
- When he (Lord Siva) is in touch with tamo-guna he appears contaminated by the material modes of nature. This is explained in Srimad-Bhagavatam and the Brahma-samhita
- When influenced by the modes of material nature, a living entity forgets this relationship and thinks in terms of different species of life; but when he again comes to his original consciousness, he does not observe such bodily designations
- When not manifested, the modes of material nature are said to be in goodness. When they are externally manifested and active in producing the varieties of material existence, they are said to be in passion

- When situated in this original position, the living entity is unaffected by the modes of material nature
- When the gross material body is not manifest, the living entity cannot factually act in the modes of material nature
- When the living entity is thus unaffected by the modes of material nature, because he is unchanging and does not claim proprietorship, he remains apart from the reactions of the modes, just as the sun remains aloof from its reflection on water
- When the living entity now covered by the modes of material nature is freed from ignorance, passion, and so-called goodness, he becomes one with the Absolute Truth. Such oneness is called mukti, or freedom from the miseries of material life
- When the living entity wants to enjoy the modes of material nature in their totality, he prefers, out of many bodily forms, to accept that body which has nine gates, two hands and two legs. Thus he prefers to become a human being or a demigod
- When the Lord appears, He remains in His spiritual position, uncontaminated by the modes of material nature, and therefore in Bhagavad-gita the Lord expresses the quality of His appearance as atma-mayaya, "performed by internal potency"

- Why are there so many different bodies? Why not one kind of body? The answer to this is also given in Bhagavad-gita (13.22) - It is due to his association with the modes of material nature. Thus he meets with good and evil among various species
- Why one is getting better position, and why one is not getting? Why one is dog, and why one is millionaire? So it is due to our association with different modes of material nature
- Within them the demigods and others also were manifested in terms of the modes of material nature
- Without working for Krsna, everyone is under the spell of these modes of material nature. And there is no training how to work for Krsna. That is the defect of modern civilization

- Yoga-randhita-karmanah. As long as one is covered by material nature's modes of ignorance and passion, there is no possibility of understanding the Supreme Lord
- You (Krsna), who are free from endeavor, unaffected by the modes of material nature, and changeless in Your spiritual situation. There are no contradictions in You, who are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Parabrahman - SB 10.3.19
- You are not transcendental. You are trying to be transcendental. You should always remember that "We are trying to be transcendental." When you are actually on transcendental state, you will not be affected by any modes of material nature
