Theme Analysis

In the material world, anxiety is synonymous with distress and illusion. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the grand scheme of spiritual life is not to artificially kill our emotions, but to transfer our attachment and anxiety to Kṛṣṇa. If one feels anxiety for Kṛṣṇa, it is no longer a material condition; it is pure, ecstatic love. This specific anxiety is the defining characteristic of a pure devotee, who is never idle but always anxious to do something for the Supreme Lord twenty-four hours a day.

The supreme expressions of this transcendental anxiety are found in the residents of Vṛndāvana. Because they do not view Kṛṣṇa as the all-powerful God, but as their beloved child or friend, their anxiety is boundless. Mother Yaśodā would become dizzy with worry if she did not hear the sound of Kṛṣṇa's flute at sunset. When Kṛṣṇa was fighting the Kāliya serpent, the cows, bulls, and cowherd men stood on the bank, overwhelmed with grief and anxiety, unable to help their beloved. The gopīs exhibit the highest echelon of this emotion; they faint in separation, worrying that Kṛṣṇa's tender feet might be wounded by pebbles in the forest, and they become so anxious to meet Him that they put their clothes and cosmetics on improperly.

For the practicing devotee, Kṛṣṇa anxiety takes practical forms. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that worrying about how to protect temple property, how to dress the Deity nicely, or how to push on the missionary movement is all classified as bhakti. A sincere student must be anxious to hear kṛṣṇa-kathā (topics about Kṛṣṇa), because it is this very anxiety to hear about the Lord that qualifies one to receive guidance from within the heart. The spiritual master, acting as Kṛṣṇa's representative, is sent specifically to match the sincere anxiety of the disciple. Thus, being overloaded with work and anxiety for Kṛṣṇa's service does not produce material fatigue, but rather transcendental bliss and guaranteed salvation.

  • The Nature of Pure Love: Anxiety for Kṛṣṇa is not a material defect; it is the direct manifestation of pure, unalloyed love and attachment to the Supreme Lord.
  • The Anxieties of Vraja: The residents of Vṛndāvana, particularly Mother Yaśodā and the gopīs, perfectly exhibit this ecstatic anxiety, constantly worrying about Kṛṣṇa's safety and longing for His association.
  • Practical Krsna Anxiety: For practitioners, anxiety for Kṛṣṇa means constantly worrying about how to execute devotional service, how to worship the Deity, and how to expand the preaching movement.
  • Eagerness to Hear: A genuine symptom of spiritual advancement is an intense, unyielding anxiety to hear authorized messages about Kṛṣṇa from a bona fide spiritual master.
