Theme Analysis

Srila Prabhupada explains that the material world is inherently a place of anxiety. Because the conditioned soul falsely identifies with the temporary body and seeks happiness through sense gratification, they are perpetually anxious about the future, economic development, and family maintenance. However, a person who takes to Krsna consciousness becomes entirely free from this fear. Knowing that the Supreme Lord is their ultimate protector, a pure devotee is not at all anxious for their personal self. Interestingly, anxiety itself is not abolished but spiritually transformed; feeling anxiety for Krsna's service or compassion for the suffering of fallen souls is a symptom of pure love. The Supreme Lord Himself exhibits this loving anxiety, acting like an affectionate father waiting for His lost children to return home. Ultimately, the only way to cure the rampant anxiety of modern civilization is to accept the peace formula presented in Vedic scriptures and surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

  • The Disease of Materialism: Identification with the material body and the pursuit of sense gratification are the root causes of all worldly anxiety and dissatisfaction.
  • Freedom Through Surrender: A fully Krsna conscious person achieves complete peace because they implicitly trust the Supreme Lord's protection and have no desire for personal gain.
  • Transcendental Anxiety: While material anxiety binds the soul, spiritual anxiety—worrying about how to please Krsna or deliver fallen souls—is a symptom of supreme transcendental love.
  • The Lord's Compassion: The Supreme Personality of Godhead is deeply anxious for the welfare of the conditioned souls, constantly attempting to guide them back to the spiritual world.
  • The Ultimate Peace Formula: Modern society's anxious attempts to establish peace will fail unless humanity accepts Krsna as the supreme enjoyer, proprietor, and friend of all.
