Theme Analysis

The name "Kṛṣṇa" literally means "the all-attractive one." Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead possesses unlimited, transcendental qualities, beauty, mellows, and fragrance that naturally attract all living entities. In the spiritual world of Goloka Vṛndāvana, this attraction is the natural situation of everything; the gopīs, the cowherd boys, the elderly residents, and even the birds, beasts, plants, and water are completely captivated by Kṛṣṇa's beauty and the vibration of His flute. Kṛṣṇa's form is so enchanting that it attracts even Cupid (Madana), earning the Lord the name Madana-mohana, the bewitcher of Cupid.

In the material world, however, the conditioned soul's natural attraction is covered by māyā, leading to an unnatural attachment to temporary bodily features and sense gratification. The sum and substance of material life is this misplaced attraction, particularly toward the opposite sex. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is designed to cure this disease. By simply hearing about Kṛṣṇa's qualities, chanting His holy names, and associating with devotees, the heart is cleansed. As the soul is purified, its dormant, natural attraction to Kṛṣṇa awakens, and the false allure of material beauty is immediately extinguished, as famously declared by the great devotee Śrī Yāmunācārya.

The absolute, transcendental nature of Kṛṣṇa's attractiveness is proven by its effect on fully liberated souls. Even self-realized sages (ātmārāmas) like Śukadeva Gosvāmī and the four Kumāras, who had completely rejected all material desires and merged into the impersonal Brahman, found themselves irresistibly attracted to the personal form and pastimes of Kṛṣṇa. Ultimately, whether one is drawn to Kṛṣṇa out of reverence, friendship, or the supreme paramour love exhibited by the gopīs, being attracted by Kṛṣṇa is the guarantee of liberation from the cycle of birth and death and the attainment of eternal, blissful devotional service.

  • The Meaning of Kṛṣṇa: The Supreme Lord is the ultimate reservoir of all beauty and opulence, making Him naturally all-attractive to every living entity.
  • The Natural State of Vṛndāvana: In the spiritual world, everything—from the gopīs to the very trees and rivers—is flawlessly and completely attracted by Kṛṣṇa.
  • Curing Material Attachment: The process of bhakti-yoga transfers a person's diseased attraction for temporary material bodies back to the eternal, absolute beauty of the Lord.
  • Attracting the Liberated: The highest proof of Kṛṣṇa's spiritual supremacy is that even fully liberated impersonalists are helplessly attracted to His personal form and pastimes.
