Theme Analysis

The very name Kṛṣṇa means "the all-attractive." Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the living entities are eternal parts and parcels of the Supreme Lord, it is their constitutional nature to be attracted to Him. However, this natural affinity is currently covered by the material energy (māyā). Consequently, the conditioned soul misdirects their inherent loving propensity toward temporary, false objects of sense gratification, resulting in endless frustration. The entire purpose of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is to cure this misdirection by reawakening the soul's dormant attraction for Kṛṣṇa.

This reawakening is a systematic process. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that because we currently have no natural attraction for the Lord, we must deliberately cultivate it through kṛṣṇa-kathā—submissively hearing about Kṛṣṇa's name, form, qualities, and pastimes from the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. By taking shelter of a bona fide spiritual master and associating with pure devotees, the material covering is gradually removed. As one's attraction for Kṛṣṇa increases, the attraction for material sense gratification, particularly sex life, naturally diminishes. Kṛṣṇa, as Madana-mohana, completely conquers the material Cupid.

As the devotee advances, this attraction matures into spontaneous love (rāgānugā-bhakti) and manifests in specific transcendental mellows (rasas)—neutrality, servitorship, friendship, parental affection, and conjugal love. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Kṛṣṇa is the akhila-rasāmṛta-mūrti, the transcendental form of attraction for all types of devotees. The highest pinnacle of this attraction is exhibited by the gopīs of Vṛndāvana, and specifically by Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. While mundane scholars mistakenly equate the gopīs' attraction with material lust, Śrīla Prabhupāda firmly establishes that their intense, unalloyed desire to please Kṛṣṇa's senses is the absolute perfection of pure devotional service.

  • The Natural State: It is constitutionally natural for all living entities to be attracted to Kṛṣṇa, the supreme center of all attraction.
  • The Process of Awakening: Dormant love for God is revived by submissively hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā and associating with pure devotees under the guidance of a spiritual master.
  • The Supreme Antidote: The only effective way to permanently vanquish material desires and the attraction to sense gratification is to develop a superior attraction for Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Varieties of Mellows: Attraction to Kṛṣṇa develops into spontaneous love in various relationships, culminating in the unparalleled conjugal love of the gopīs and Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
