Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda describes Navadvīpa as the sacred birthsite of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the arena for His early pastimes (ādi-līlā). Before accepting the renounced order, the Lord lived in Navadvīpa for twenty-four years, first exhibiting His pastimes as a matchless scholar and later as the inaugurator of the saṅkīrtana movement.

  • The Hub of Scholarship: Initially, the Lord performed the pastimes of a learned scholar. He defeated the world-conquering champion Keśava Kāśmīrī, proving that even as a young boy, He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • Inaugurating Saṅkīrtana: The primary mood of the Lord in Navadvīpa was that of a devotee. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that He induced every person to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, inundating the entire town with love of God. He ordered that saṅkīrtana be performed in every home.
  • Gathering of Associates: Navadvīpa was the meeting ground for the Lord's eternal associates. Nityānanda Prabhu came there after hearing of the Lord's glories. Advaita Ācārya, Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura, and others joined Him to assist in His mission.
  • Return to Kuliya: Even after taking sannyāsa, the Lord returned to the Navadvīpa area (specifically Kuliya-grāma) to fulfill a promise to His mother and to forgive the offenses of local residents like Devānanda Paṇḍita.
