Theme Analysis

The ultimate perfection of all religious, philosophical, and occupational endeavors is the development of unalloyed love for Kṛṣṇa. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, and as confirmed by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the goals of mundane religion, economic development, sense gratification, and impersonal liberation are completely insignificant compared to prema pum-artho mahān—the supreme goal of pure love of God. Currently, due to material conditioning, the living entities have forgotten their original relationship with Kṛṣṇa. However, this dormant affection can be systematically awakened through the authorized practice of bhakti-yoga.

The process for developing this love is highly practical. It requires submissive hearing and chanting (śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam), active engagement in temple worship, honoring Kṛṣṇa prasādam, and constantly associating with pure Vaiṣṇavas. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that simply executing duties flawlessly or strictly following rules without simultaneously developing attachment and love for Kṛṣṇa is a complete waste of time. The true test of any religious system or daily occupation is whether it increases one's attachment to satisfying the Supreme Lord.

When a devotee successfully develops this pure love, their vision and lifestyle undergo a miraculous transformation. Just as a mother instantly sees her child when looking at their shoes or toys, a pure devotee whose eyes are smeared with the ointment of love (premāñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena) sees Kṛṣṇa twenty-four hours a day, within their heart and in everything around them. Without this developed love, it is impossible to remain engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service continuously. Because Kṛṣṇa includes everyone, a person who learns to love Kṛṣṇa perfectly and naturally loves all living entities, automatically acquiring all the exalted qualities of the demigods and achieving the ultimate cure for the material disease.

  • The Supreme Goal: Developing pure love for Kṛṣṇa (prema) is the highest perfection of life, far surpassing all material achievements and impersonal liberation.
  • The Process of Awakening: Dormant love is systematically awakened through submissive chanting, hearing, temple worship, and the association of Vaiṣṇavas.
  • The Ultimate Test: The true measure of success in any duty or religious practice is whether it increases one's attachment and loving desire to satisfy Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Vision of Love: A devotee who has developed pure love for Kṛṣṇa sees the Lord twenty-four hours a day, everywhere and in everything.
