Theme Analysis

The quality of being "equal to everyone" (sama-darsana) is a primary symptom of spiritual advancement. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains this concept on two levels: the position of the Supreme Lord and the qualification of His devotee. The Lord is impartial, like a father or the sun, providing opportunities for everyone; however, He reciprocates specifically with those who surrender to Him. For the devotee, equality means transcending bodily designations like race, nationality, and species. A true mahātmā sees the spirit soul in every living being—including animals—and therefore offers respect, friendship, and charity to all. This spiritual equality is the prerequisite for entering pure devotional service and is demonstrated practically by preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the entire world without discrimination.

  • The Lord's Impartiality: God is like a father or the government; He gives equal facilities to all, but individuals enjoy or suffer according to their own actions.
  • Sama-darśana: The pure devotee sees with equal vision, knowing that everyone is a spirit soul, regardless of their bodily dress.
  • Beyond Species: True equality extends to animals. A leader or brāhmaṇa must protect and provide for animals just as they do for humans.
  • The Preaching Mission: The ultimate expression of equality is distributing the message of Kṛṣṇa to every corner of the globe, breaking the monopoly of caste or creed.
  • Symptom of Peace: One who is equal to everyone is prasānta (pacified) because they are free from the duality of friend and enemy.
