Theme Analysis

The absolute impartiality of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a fundamental principle of Vedic philosophy. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda and the Bhagavad-gītā, Lord Kṛṣṇa unequivocally declares, samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ: "I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all." Because every living entity—whether a demigod in the heavenly planets or a demon in the lower regions—is an eternal part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, He cannot harbor mundane partiality. As the Supersoul (Paramātmā) situated in everyone's heart, He impartially observes all activities and fulfills everyone's desires, allowing them to enjoy the fruitive reactions of their own karma.

The Lord's equality is beautifully illustrated through natural comparisons. The flowing Ganges water is meant for the purification of everyone, yet the trees on its banks derive different values based on their own capacities. Similarly, an electrician connects both a heater and a cooler to the exact same electrical energy. In the same way, the Supreme Lord distributes His mercy equally; the lower and higher positions of different living entities are simply the results of their own desires and material contamination. The Lord is never to be blamed if an unfortunate living being, due to bad association, refuses to accept His perfect instructions.

Although God is perfectly equal to everyone, a common misunderstanding arises when He appears to favor His devotees, such as when He protects Prahlāda Mahārāja and kills the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that this is not mundane partiality, but a natural reciprocation of love. Just as a father cares specially for an obedient child not out of prejudice but out of loving reciprocation, the Lord gives special attention and protection to those who engage in unalloyed devotional service.

Furthermore, even the Lord's apparent wrath is a manifestation of His supreme equality. When He kills demons, it is actually a profound blessing that liberates them from their sinful condition. Therefore, whether He is offering benedictions to the demigods or punishing the asuras, His actions are always completely free from material inebriety. The Supreme Lord is eternally peaceful, self-controlled, and equally disposed toward all living beings.

  • The Absolute Declaration: Lord Kṛṣṇa declares in the Bhagavad-gītā (samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu) that He is equal to everyone, having no enemies and no friends.
  • The Impartial Provider: Like the sun or an electrical current, the Lord impartially provides energy and fulfills the desires of all living entities according to their karma.
  • The Reciprocation of Love: Although equal to all, the Lord naturally favors and gives special protection to His pure devotees, which is an expression of love, not mundane partiality.
  • Equality in Punishment: The Lord's punishment of demons is also a manifestation of His supreme equality and mercy, as it ultimately liberates them from sin.
