Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively discusses the sublime process and universal necessity of glorifying Kṛṣṇa (kīrtana). The entire Vedic literature—the Upaniṣads, Vedānta, and Purāṇas—is meant solely for the glorification of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that glorifying Kṛṣṇa through chanting, singing, or writing is non-different from Kṛṣṇa Himself. This transcendental vibration (śravaṇam kīrtanam) cleanses the heart, stops the cycle of birth and death, and elevates human society to perfection. Even if presented in broken language, any literature glorifying the Lord can cause a spiritual revolution. Furthermore, because the Lord and His devotees are absolute, glorifying a pure Vaiṣṇava is as good as—or even more pleasing to the Lord than—glorifying Kṛṣṇa directly.

  • The Essence of Vedic Knowledge: All authorized Vedic literatures, from the Upaniṣads to the Purāṇas, have one singular purpose: to glorify the qualities and pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
  • The Purifying Power of Kīrtana: Engaging in the congregational chanting of the holy names immediately purifies the heart of anyone, regardless of their social standing, and immunizes them against the fear of death.
  • Literature that Causes a Revolution: Books and poetry dedicated to glorifying the Lord possess immense spiritual potency; even if grammatically flawed, they can create a revolution in the misdirected civilization of the world.
  • Glorifying the Pure Devotees: The Supreme Lord is supremely pleased when His pure devotees are glorified. Because the Lord and His devotees are inseparable, glorifying a Vaiṣṇava is identical to glorifying the Lord.
