Theme Analysis
Although the Supreme Personality of Godhead is fundamentally the supreme male (puruṣa) and the ultimate enjoyer, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that because God is absolute, He encompasses both male and female natures. To execute His divine will, the Lord can effortlessly assume a feminine form. This is perfectly demonstrated in the incarnation of Mohinī-mūrti, who appeared during the churning of the ocean of milk. As Śrīla Prabhupāda notes, Mohinī-mūrti's beauty was so unparalleled that it challenged and even surpassed the beauty of the goddess of fortune, Lakṣmīdevī.
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains two major pastimes of Mohinī-mūrti. The first was to trick the demons. Captivated by Her large breasts, thin waist, and sweet words, the demons foolishly handed Her the jug of nectar, which She then distributed exclusively to the demigods (while punishing the demon Rāhu). The second pastime involved the greatest of yogis, Lord Śiva. Hearing of this beautiful female incarnation, Lord Śiva requested to see Her, confident that he could not be agitated by any woman. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord gravely accepted this challenge. Upon seeing Mohinī-mūrti, Lord Śiva was completely struck by Cupid's arrow, chased after Her, and ultimately acknowledged his defeat, proving the absolute, all-attractive power of the Supreme Lord's internal potency.
