Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the absolute, non-different nature of God's name. Because the Supreme Lord is the Absolute Truth, there is no difference between Him and His holy name; the name has all the potencies of the Person. While the Lord is considered nameless because He has no material designation, He has millions of spiritual names based on His transcendental qualities and activities, such as Acyuta, Yajña, Hari, and Rāma. However, the name Kṛṣṇa is the principal and supreme name because it means "all-attractive." Śrīla Prabhupāda stresses that the only way to attain perfection, especially in the degraded age of Kali-yuga, is to constantly chant the holy name of the Lord, which purifies the heart and reveals the Lord's form, qualities, and pastimes directly to the sincere chanter.

  • The Absolute Nature of the Holy Name: In the spiritual realm, there is absolutely no difference between the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His transcendental name.
  • The Supreme Name of God: While the Lord has unlimited names based on His infinite pastimes, Kṛṣṇa is the principal name because it signifies His all-attractive nature.
  • The Power of Purification: Even a careless or accidental chanting of the Lord's holy name, as demonstrated by Ajāmila, possesses the power to completely purify a conditioned soul.
  • The Futility of Material Conceptions: Mundane speculators and impersonalists fail to understand that the Lord's name is not a material designation but a purely spiritual vibration.
  • The Recommended Sacrifice for this Age: The supreme method for self-realization in the current age is the constant chanting of the holy names through the mahā-mantra.
  • The Revelation of Transcendental Knowledge: By purely chanting and hearing the holy name, a devotee automatically realizes the Lord's form, qualities, and divine pastimes.
