Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute, transcendental position of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, thoroughly refuting the foolish notion that He is a mundane mortal. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when the Lord descends into the material world in a human-like form, such as Kṛṣṇa or Rāmacandra, people with a poor fund of knowledge (mūḍhas) deride Him, mistaking Him for an ordinary human being. However, the Lord's body is entirely spiritual (sac-cid-ānanda), with no difference between His body and His soul. Furthermore, unlike an ordinary living entity who is forced to accept a material body by the laws of karma, the Lord appears out of His own sweet will by His internal potency (yogamāyā). His activities are always superhuman (urukrama), definitively proving that He is the supreme controller and never an ordinary man.

  • The Illusion of Nondevotees: Atheists and rascals are bewildered by the human-like appearance of the Supreme Lord. Lacking spiritual vision, they commit offenses by treating the Absolute Truth as a mundane historical figure.
  • The Transcendental Body: An ordinary human has a material body separate from the spiritual soul. For the Supreme Personality of Godhead, there is absolutely no difference between His body and His self; His form is completely spiritual.
  • Unforced Appearance: A conditioned soul is forced to take birth according to the strict laws of material nature. The Supreme Lord, however, retains His full independence and descends purely by His own internal potency.
  • Superhuman Activities: The activities of the Lord are completely beyond the capacity of any mortal. By performing wonderful, superhuman feats, the Lord proves His supreme dominion and completely distinguishes Himself from ordinary living beings.
