Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Brahman (Parabrahman), the ultimate source of both the material and spiritual worlds. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while all living entities are spirit (Brahman) and qualitatively one with the Lord, they are infinitesimal fragments. The Supreme Brahman, however, is the infinite complete whole. Impersonalists, known as Māyāvādīs, mistakenly attempt to drag the Supreme Brahman down to the level of the individual soul by denying His eternal form, personality, and supreme control. In contrast, the Vedic literatures, such as the Vedānta-sūtra and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, confirm that the Supreme Brahman is the supreme conscious being from whom everything emanates. Recognizing one's identity as Brahman is merely the preliminary stage of realization; true perfection is achieved when the individual Brahman engages in the loving devotional service of the Supreme Brahman.

  • The Supreme Spirit: While everything is spiritual in its original nature, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Brahman, the ultimate truth who is differently situated from everything material.
  • Refuting Impersonalism: The Māyāvādī philosophy falsely claims that the Supreme Brahman is formless and that the living entity can become the Supreme. The Vaiṣṇavas reject this, knowing the individual soul is an eternal servant of the Supreme Brahman.
  • The Creator and Controller: The Supreme Brahman is never covered by the material energy (māyā). Rather, He is the creator and absolute controller of the material nature; even the sun and the wind operate out of fear of Him.
  • The Goal of Self-Realization: Simply understanding that one is not matter but spirit (Brahman) is insufficient. Real perfection, or pure bhakti, begins when the transcendentally situated soul renders service unto the Supreme Brahman.
