Category:God Is The Supreme Spirit

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Spirit, the infinite source from whom all individual spiritual sparks emanate. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the living entities are qualitatively one with the Supreme Spirit—being purely spiritual and eternal—they are quantitatively infinitesimal (anu), whereas the Lord is unlimited and all-pervading (vibhu). The material world is created when the Supreme Spirit sets the material elements in motion through His inconceivable energies. True knowledge begins when a person realizes that they are not the material body but a minute part and parcel of the Supreme Spirit. This realization leads to detachment from material enjoyment and the beginning of pure devotional service. Just as an iron rod becomes fire when placed in contact with fire, the material energy becomes spiritualized when engaged in the service of the Supreme Spirit.

  • Qualitative Oneness, Quantitative Difference: The individual soul and the Supreme Spirit are identical in quality, but the Lord is infinite and all-pervading, while the living entity is a minute, atomic spark.
  • The Source of Energy: All material and spiritual worlds emanate from the Supreme Spirit. Like fire expanding its heat and light, the Lord expands Himself everywhere through His manifold energies.
  • Transcending Material Designations: Real identity is found not in bodily varnas or asramas, but in the understanding that one is eternally part and parcel of the Supreme Spirit, Visnu.
  • The Spiritualizing Touch: Contact with the Supreme Spirit transforms one's consciousness and even material energy, removing the desire for mundane enjoyment and establishing one in Krsna consciousness.
