Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the absolute supremacy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead over all creations, energies, and living entities. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Bhagavān is the ultimate cause of all causes, the supreme maintainer, and the supreme controller of both the material and spiritual worlds. While the living entities (jīvas) are qualitative parts and parcels of the Lord, they are infinitesimal and prone to fall under the control of material nature. The Supreme Lord, however, is infallible and always remains completely transcendental to the material modes. Recognizing God's supreme position is the true purpose of all yoga, religion, and knowledge. By abandoning the false desire to merge into the existence of the Supreme and instead surrendering to Him in unalloyed devotional service (bhakti), the conditioned soul attains the ultimate perfection of eternal association with the Lord.

  • The Origin of Everything: The Supreme Lord is the source of all material and spiritual emanations. Everything that exists rests upon His supreme energy and direction.
  • The Supreme Controller: The laws of nature, the rotation of the planets, and the maintenance of all living entities are expertly managed by the supreme will of the Lord.
  • Transcendental to Material Nature: Although the Lord creates and controls the material world, He is never affected by the modes of material nature. He remains eternally situated in pure goodness.
  • The Subordinate Jīva: The individual soul is a minute spark of the Supreme. The living entity's natural, constitutional position is to be subordinate to and serve the supreme whole.
  • The True Purpose of Yoga and Religion: The goal of all authentic religious principles and yoga systems is to re-establish one's lost relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, not to artificially become one with Him.
