Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that every living entity in the material world is subjected to various levels of influence, primarily dictated by the three modes of material nature: goodness, passion, and ignorance. While the conditioned soul is easily overwhelmed by the power of māyā, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, remains the absolute controller of all energies and is never subject to mundane influence. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the influence of eternal time and astronomical configurations is factual and binds the living entity to their fruitive reactions. However, by the divine influence of the spiritual master and the practice of unalloyed devotional service, one can transcend these inferior forces and become situated in their original, spiritual nature.

  • The Supreme Master of All Influence: Unlike the common living being, the Supreme Lord is never influenced by the modes of nature or the passage of time, as He is the source of these energies.
  • Subjugation of the Marginal Identity: Living entities are enwrapped in fruitive activities and mistaken identities because they are prone to being covered by the influence of nescience.
  • The Interaction of the Material Modes: Human society is constantly driven by goodness, passion, and ignorance, which shape the intelligence and determining the destination of the soul.
  • The Factual Reality of Cosmic Influence: Time and the constellations of stars exert a factual influence on the child and the adult alike, dictating the results of one's past activities.
  • The Illusory Covering of Material Desire: Under the influence of the external energy, the soul fails to recognize its miserable condition and instead develops enmity toward the Lord.
  • Transcendental Freedom via Divine Association: The influence of the modes can be vanquished only by hearing from saintly authorities and engaging in the service of Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
