Theme Analysis

Studying Kṛṣṇa is not an academic pursuit or an exercise in mental speculation but a sacred science that gradually reveals the unlimited nature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead to the sincere and submissive seeker. Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently warns against the fundamental error of approaching Kṛṣṇa through one's own limited material intelligence — what he vividly calls the "frog standard" — and affirms that Kṛṣṇa can only be understood through the Vedic scriptures, the association of devotees, and the lens of transcendental vision cultivated through devotional service. The study of Kṛṣṇa is inexhaustible, for Kṛṣṇa Himself is unlimited, and every step deeper into this study is a step deeper into Kṛṣṇa consciousness itself.

  • The Impossibility of Studying Kṛṣṇa by Material Standards: Kṛṣṇa is not an object of ordinary academic or mental examination. Our senses are limited, our perception is conditioned, and the attempt to measure the unlimited by the limited is compared to a frog trying to calculate the size of the ocean from within a well. Kṛṣṇa is transcendental, and only those with transcendental vision can begin to understand Him as He is.
  • The Correct Method - Scripture, Devotion and Self-Revelation: The proper approach to studying Kṛṣṇa is through the Vedic literature, particularly the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and through hearing from those who have studied Him submissively. Kṛṣṇa reveals Himself to the extent that the seeker is qualified, and that partial revelation is already sufficient to transform one's entire life. He who simply studies the sacred conversation of the Bhagavad-gītā worships Kṛṣṇa by his very intelligence.
  • The Inexhaustible Nature of Studying Kṛṣṇa: Kṛṣṇa's potencies, pastimes, and personal qualities are unlimited and can never be exhausted by any finite study. The more one studies the pastimes of the Lord, the more one becomes attached to Him. From the analytical study of His person in the Brahma-saṁhitā to the intimate details of His childhood in Vṛndāvana, every angle of study deepens one's absorption in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
  • Studying Kṛṣṇa as the Essence of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness: The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is fundamentally a scientific and philosophical mission to understand Kṛṣṇa not sentimentally but with jñāna and vijñāna — knowledge and realized knowledge. By studying Kṛṣṇa through His own words, His activities in this world and the spiritual world, and the testimony of great devotees, one becomes divine, free from material entanglement, and ultimately fit to return to the spiritual world.
