Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the original puruṣa, or the supreme male enjoyer and controller of all existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Absolute Truth is never impersonal or female, but is always a person—the ādi-puruṣa. The living entities and the material energy are both considered prakṛti, or feminine, meaning they are eternally subordinate and meant to be enjoyed by the supreme puruṣa. Out of His inconceivable potency, the original Lord expands into three primary puruṣa-avatāras—Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu—to create, maintain, and direct the affairs of the innumerable material universes. Thus, understanding God as the supreme puruṣa is the foundation of true spiritual realization and unalloyed devotional service.

  • The Original Supreme Male: The Supreme Lord is the eternal, original person (ādi-puruṣa). He is always the supreme male predominator, and the conception of the Absolute Truth as a female or an impersonal force is a misunderstanding.
  • The Enjoyer and the Enjoyed: God is the puruṣa (the enjoyer), while all living entities and material nature are His prakṛti (the enjoyed). The conditioned soul suffers by falsely trying to imitate the supreme enjoyer in the material world.
  • The Three Puruṣa-avatāras: To facilitate the material creation, the Lord expands into three distinct puruṣa features: Mahā-Viṣṇu (who creates the universes), Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu (who enters each universe), and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu (the Supersoul in every heart).
  • The Ultimate Controller of Nature: Material nature cannot act independently. It is only when the first puruṣa incarnation glances over the material energy that the creation of the cosmos is initiated.
