Category:God's Enjoying

Theme Analysis

The philosophical essence of this category establishes the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the ultimate enjoyer (bhoktā). Unlike the impersonal conception of the Absolute Truth, which imagines a static, emotionless void, the Vedic literatures, particularly the Vedānta-sūtra, declare the Lord to be ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt—by nature completely full of joy. Because He is the reservoir of all pleasure, He eternally enjoys transcendental bliss through His internal potency (hlādinī-śakti). God did not create the universe or the living entities out of necessity; He expanded Himself into many simply to increase His enjoyment. The living entities are constitutionally His parts and parcels, meant to assist Him in His pleasure rather than trying to imitate Him by enjoying independently. The Lord's enjoyment is fully spiritual (nirguṇa) and takes many forms: He enjoys intimate, conjugal love with the gopīs in Vṛndāvana, parental affection with Mother Yaśodā, sporting and mock fighting with His friends, and even the severe, universe-shaking combat with demons like Hiraṇyākṣa. Amazingly, the Supreme Lord derives the greatest pleasure not from awe and reverence, but by subordinating Himself to the pure love of His devotees, enjoying being dependent on them and relishing their affectionate chastisements.

  • The Supreme Enjoyer: God is not a passive energy; He is the supreme enjoyer (bhoktā). According to the Vedānta-sūtra, He is by nature joyful (ānandamayo 'bhyāsāt), and all His activities are composed of pure, transcendental bliss (ānanda-cinmaya-rasa).
  • The Purpose of Creation: The Supreme Lord expanded Himself into the innumerable living entities specifically for reciprocal enjoyment. The constitutional position of the living entity is to be enjoyed by the Lord, not to be the enjoyer.
  • Spiritual Variety: The Lord's enjoyment is not monotonous. He enjoys in various relationships (rasas)—from exchanging joking words with His queens and sporting with cowherd boys, to fighting fierce demons and sleeping peacefully on the bed of Śeṣa Nāga amidst the waters of devastation.
  • Subordinating Himself to Devotees: Although He is the unconquerable master of the universe, the Lord derives the highest enjoyment by becoming dependent on His pure devotees. He relishes the chastisement of Mother Yaśodā and takes greater pleasure in intimate names like Devakī-nandana than in formal titles of reverence.
  • Realizing Our True Position: True spiritual perfection (Kṛṣṇa consciousness) is achieved when the conditioned soul abandons the false desire for independent sense gratification and dedicates all activities to the enjoyment of the Supreme Lord.
