Theme Analysis
The Absolute Truth is not a void or an inactive principle; He is the supreme enjoyer. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Balarāma, as the first plenary expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa, fully participates in the blissful, dynamic pastimes of the spiritual world. During Their childhood in Vṛndāvana, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma enjoyed acting like ordinary village boys. They would joyfully imitate the sounds of peacocks, cuckoos, and swans, and playfully recreate the epic pastimes of Lord Rāmacandra by having Their friends act as the monkey army of Hanumān. Even great wrestlers like Cāṇūra recognized that Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma loved to enjoy wrestling with each other while tending the cows.
The natural environment of Vṛndāvana perfectly facilitated the Lord's enjoyment. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the forest—replenished by the rainy season and autumn—provided a soothing atmosphere filled with rivers, lakes, and sweet-smelling breezes. Encouraged by intimate friends like Śrīdāmā and Subala, Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa wandered through the Tālavana and other forests to fully enjoy the aromatic fruits and the pristine nature of the spiritual realm.
As the Lord matured, His pastimes expanded to include the highest echelon of transcendental exchange: conjugal love. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Lord Balarāma also enjoyed the rāsa dance. For two consecutive months (Caitra and Vaiśākha), Balarāma remained in Vṛndāvana, passing every night singing, dancing, and satisfying the pure spiritual desires of the gopīs. These moonlit nights on the banks of the Yamunā were so blissful that they seemed to pass in the fraction of a moment. Furthermore, after subduing the personified Yamunā river, Lord Balarāma enjoyed swimming in her waters like a regal elephant surrounded by she-elephants, completely immersed in transcendental satisfaction.
- Childhood Sports: Balarāma enjoyed His early years in Vṛndāvana by herding calves, wrestling, and playfully imitating animals and the heroic monkeys of Lord Rāmacandra.
- Relishing Nature: The pristine forests, clean lakes, and fruit-bearing trees of Vṛndāvana provided the perfect, soothing atmosphere for the Supreme Lord's daily enjoyment.
- The Supreme Rasa: Lord Balarāma enjoyed the pinnacle of spiritual exchange by participating in the rāsa dance, fulfilling the pure conjugal desires of the gopīs over two months.
- Aquatic Pastimes: Bathing and swimming in the holy waters of the Yamunā, Balarāma experienced majestic, elephant-like enjoyment, subsequently receiving divine garments from the goddess of fortune.
