Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the amount of material happiness and distress a living entity will experience is fixed the moment they receive a particular type of body. Attempting to improve one's material condition through immense economic or scientific endeavor is ultimately useless, as the laws of nature strictly enforce this predestined quota. The only thing a living entity can truly change through free will is their spiritual future; by acting in goodness and cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness, one becomes the architect of their spiritual destiny, breaking free from the rigid laws of material karma.
