Śrīla Prabhupāda defines the "mundane world" as a temporary, shadowy reflection of the eternal spiritual reality. A defining characteristic of this world is the presence of four inherent defects in all conditioned souls: the tendency to commit mistakes, being subject to illusion, the propensity to cheat, and having imperfect senses. Because of these defects, knowledge and relationships in the mundane sphere are always flawed and "flickering."
However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the mundane world is not disconnected from the Absolute; it is a "perverted reflection." The varieties of enjoyment and relationships found here—such as friendship, parenthood, or conjugal love—have their pure, original forms in the spiritual world. The crucial difference is that the mundane world is full of "inebrieties" and is governed by time, whereas the spiritual world is free from such defects. The Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, and His pure devotees may appear within this world, but they are never of it; they remain transcendental and act as purifying agents to liberate others from the cycle of mundane existence.
