Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes a profound and practical philosophical distinction between the conditioned living entities and the Supreme Lord. Everyone in the material world is a relative controller. A person may control their family or their subordinates at the office, but they are simultaneously controlled by something higher, such as the laws of nature, their own superiors, or public opinion. Nobody is the absolute controller. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the title of absolute controller belongs exclusively to Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who controls everyone and is controlled by no one. By observing this hierarchy, one can easily understand that the ultimate controller must be a Supreme Person, just as a government is ultimately led by a president.

  • The Illusion of Independence: We must first ascertain whether we are the absolute controller or if we are controlled by higher forces like the stringent laws of nature.
  • The Relative Controller: Every living entity is dualistic in nature; they possess a little power to control, but they are always controlled by someone or something else.
  • Controlled by Nature: Despite our false ego, our tiny fraction of controlling power is constantly superseded by the powerful modes of material nature.
  • The Personal Nature of God: The absolute controller cannot be an impersonal force; there is always a Supreme Person behind the cosmic manifestation.
  • The Supreme Truth: Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate source of all control. Because He is not controlled by anyone, He is the Absolute Truth and the supreme absolute controller.
