Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the word "absolutely" to draw a clear distinction between the Supreme Lord’s position and the position of the living entities. Conditioned souls falsely claim freedom, but in reality, no living entity has an independent existence; everyone is absolutely dependent on the Supreme Will. Only the Supreme Lord, the Absolute Truth, is absolutely independent to do whatever He likes. Because of our dependent nature, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that taking up Kṛṣṇa consciousness and making spiritual advancement is "absolutely necessary" for human life. To facilitate this surrender, a practical symptom of a pure devotee is that they arrange their lives to consume and interact with the material world only as much as is "absolutely needed," avoiding artificial sensory needs to focus entirely on the absolute reality of devotional service.

  • The Illusion of Independence: Conditioned souls are never absolutely free; they are under the strict control of the Supreme Lord and His various agencies.
  • The Independence of God: Only the Supreme Personality of Godhead is absolutely independent and absolutely free to act.
  • The Absolute Necessity: Because we are spirit souls, spiritual advancement and the practices of bhakti-yoga (like surrender and hearing kṛṣṇa-kathā) are absolutely necessary to stop the cycle of birth and death.
  • Minimizing Material Demands: A genuine devotee lives simply, accepting only the bodily necessities that are absolutely required to maintain body and soul together.
