Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the term absurd to characterize approaches to spiritual life that lack submissive inquiry, factual knowledge, or authorized disciplic succession. He specifically condemns two extremes: blind following, where one joins a movement without understanding, and absurd inquiries, which are not based on a desire for truth but on mental speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that spiritual science must be learned through service and submissive questioning of a real spiritual master. Many modern commentaries on the Bhagavad-gītā are dismissed as absurd distortions because they are written by nondevotees who interpret Kṛṣṇa according to their own limited vision. Such speculators often make the absurd claim that the impersonal Brahman takes a material body or that a common man can become God. Furthermore, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the absurdity of denying universal truths, such as the existence of the four social orders (varṇas) in every country, or the vanity of relying solely on one's limited ocular perception. Ultimately, spiritual progress is only possible when one moves beyond these absurd concoctions and follows the authorized version of the scriptures.

  • Condemnation of Improper Inquiry: Both blind following and absurd inquiries are condemned in the Bhagavad-gītā; one must seek clear understanding through submission and service.
  • Authenticity of Commentary: Commentaries on the Bhagavad-gītā by nondevotees are categorized as absurd distortions and nonsense because they deviate from the original intent of the Lord.
  • The Reality of Social Orders: It is absurd to claim that the four social orders do not exist everywhere, as they are products of the modes of nature which persist throughout the universe.
  • Spiritual vs. Material Body: The allegation that the Lord accepts a material body is quite absurd; He always possesses a spiritual body, which is transcendental to the material world.
  • Reduction of Ocular Vanity: Human reliance on limited visual perception is reduced to absurdity when one considers the vastness of the sun and the cosmic manifestation.
