Theme Analysis
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the root of all material suffering and entanglement lies in the abuse of the free will. The living entity is granted a small measure of independence, but when this independence is misused to pursue sense gratification outside of the Lord's direction, it results in self-created engagements and conditioning by the modes of nature. This abuse of free will is the actual cause of material bondage, rather than any arbitrary ordination by the Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda further describes the external symptoms of this conditioned state as the use of abusive language and inimical behavior. Demonic personalities like Śiśupāla or those who are ghostly-haunted exhibit a dangerous mentality, using shaftlike abusive words against guardians, family members, and even the Supreme Lord. Furthermore, the abuse of one's qualifications—such as an intelligent man neglecting the study of Bhagavad-gītā or the misuse of sacred terms like jayanti—is considered a great waste of human potential. Ultimately, philosophical abuse, such as the Mayavadi claim that the Lord accepts a material body, is condemned as a denial of the Lord's transcendental nature. By correcting the misuse of independence and following the Vedic way of life, the living entity can stop these self-created works and regain their original spiritual freedom.
- The Root of Material Conditioning: The living entity becomes conditioned by the modes of nature simply by abusing the small measure of independence they are entitled to enjoy.
- Self-Created Engagements: All material acts and their results are self-created engagements arising from an abuse of free will, not from the ordination of the Godhead.
- Symptoms of a Haunted Mentality: Persons who are ghostly-haunted or in a dangerous state of mind will abuse their father and mother and act with inimical intent.
- Abuse of Intellectual Qualifications: An intelligent man is considered to be abusing his great qualifications if he fails to seriously study the Srimad-Bhāgavatam and Bhagavad-gītā.
- Philosophical and Verbal Offenses: The use of shaftlike abusive words by demons and the Mayavadi abuse of the Lord's appearance are major impediments to spiritual progress.
