Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the only authorized way to receive absolute knowledge is through the ācāryas in the disciplic succession. This system, known as ācāryopāsanam, involves worshiping and following the previous spiritual masters who have carried the original message of Kṛṣṇa without change. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, although there are many ācāryas throughout history—such as Rāmānujācārya, Madhvācārya, and Lord Caitanya—they are essentially "one" because they hold no different views and strictly follow the original source of all knowledge. The hallmark of a true ācārya is that they do not concoct new theories but simply serve their predecessors. Śrīla Prabhupāda attributes any credit in his own work to the fact that he has not changed the teachings of his spiritual master. Following in the footsteps of these great souls is the only way to develop intelligence and achieve success in spiritual emancipation, while those who teach conclusions contrary to the succession are considered fools or mudhas. Ultimately, the whole Vedic civilization operates under the authority of these authorized successions, which provide a solid basis for understanding the transcendental secrets of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

  • Success Through Following: Spiritual success is attained only by those who follow in the footsteps of the previous ācāryas in the line of disciplic succession.
  • Unity of View: Although there are many ācāryas, they are one because they come in the disciplic succession and hold no views different from the original spiritual master.
  • The Definition of a Guru: One who teaches a conclusion different from the succession of ācāryas is not a guru but is considered by Lord Kṛṣṇa to be a fool or mudha.
  • Credit for Consistency: Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that his only credit is that he has not changed the teachings of the ācāryas in the disciplic succession.
  • Developing Intelligence: Intelligence is not something to be concocted; it is developed through the instruction of the ācārya and by following the paramparā.
