Theme Analysis

To accept the truth as revealed by Kṛṣṇa is the fundamental qualification for spiritual advancement. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Absolute Truth is not a subject for experimental verification or mental speculation, which are limited by the imperfections of the human senses. Instead, the truth must be received through the descending process of knowledge, directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead or His bona fide representatives in disciplic succession. Whether regarding the existence of the soul, the nature of the cosmic manifestation, or the personality of the Lord, success lies in submissive hearing and the total acceptance of Vedic authority.

  • The Authority of the Supreme: Arjuna's declaration in the Bhagavad-gita serves as the ideal example for a devotee, as he totally accepts whatever Kṛṣṇa says as the absolute truth without personal interpretation.
  • Vedic Evidence over Empiricism: Spiritual realities, such as the existence of the soul, cannot be proven by material experiments; they must be accepted on the axiomatic authority of the sruti or Vedic wisdom.
  • Limitations of Logic: Speculative logic and argumentation are insufficient for reaching the Absolute Truth; one must abandon mental gymnastics and accept the version of the mahajanas and sastra.
  • Personal versus Impersonal: Accepting the Absolute Truth fully means accepting the Supreme Personality of Godhead; those who only accept the impersonal feature realize only a partial aspect of the truth.
  • The Disciplic Succession: The perfect system of learning is to receive knowledge from authority, just as the followers of Vedic wisdom accept the statements of Brahma and the acaryas as gospel truth.
