Theme Analysis

The act of acquiring wealth is a neutral activity that becomes either spiritual or material based on the consciousness of the performer. Śrīla Prabhupāda draws a sharp distinction between the devotee, who utilizes resources for the service of the Lord, and the materialist, who accumulates money solely for personal sense gratification. While the external activity may appear similar, the internal motivation determines the result: one path leads to liberation and the satisfaction of Krsna, while the other entangles the soul in the cycle of birth and death, often driving the living entity toward sinful activities, cheating, and eventual punishment by the laws of nature.

  • The Devotional Perspective: A devotee may acquire wealth, but unlike the ordinary man, they do so exclusively for the service of the Lord. They do not struggle for money but accept what comes by the grace of the Supreme, engaging it in spreading Krsna consciousness.
  • The Demoniac Mentality: Guided by insatiable greed, the demoniac person believes there is no limit to acquiring money. Driven by the concept of "I am the proprietor," they often resort to cheating and envious activities to increase their hoard for sense enjoyment.
  • Consequences of Greed: Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that money acquired through envy or cheating becomes "passage money" to hellish regions. The laws of nature and Yamaraja are strict; one who cheats to enjoy in this life suffers severe reactions in the next.
  • Destiny and Endeavor: Materialists foolishly believe that hard labor alone guarantees wealth, ignoring the law of karma. In reality, one obtains only what is destined, and a life spent solely on acquiring money for temporary comfort is a wasted human form.
