Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda provides a comprehensive analysis of activities influenced by the mode of passion, describing them as the active engagement in material life driven by intense desire. In this state, the living entity is not inert like in ignorance, but is feverishly engaged in fruitive labor, seeking personal gratification, economic development, and social prestige. While superior to the lethargy of ignorance, the mode of passion is characterized by unlimited longings that bind the soul to the cycle of karma and result in ultimate misery.

  • Unlimited Desires and Binding: The fundamental cause of activities in the mode of passion is unsatisfied desire and longing. This unceasing thirst for sense gratification binds the living entity to material fruitive work, forcing them to labor hard for temporary results.
  • The Nature of Misery: Unlike the mode of goodness, which brings illumination and happiness, activities in the mode of passion are inherently miserable. Although they may appear dynamic, they ultimately lead to distress because they are disconnected from the spiritual satisfaction of serving the Supreme Lord.
  • Perverse Intelligence: Under the influence of passion, one's intelligence becomes misguided. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that such persons often accept irreligion as religion and reject actual spiritual principles, leading to a confused and distorted worldview.
  • Renunciation Based on Trouble: Even renunciation can be situated in passion. If one gives up prescribed duties merely because they are difficult, troublesome to the body, or out of fear, this is not true detachment but a reaction born of the mode of passion.
  • Evolution from Ignorance: Activities in passion represent a step up from the inertia of ignorance. It is a state of evolution where the living entity begins to act, similar to an animal, but without the purifying knowledge found in the mode of goodness.
