Theme Analysis

To be actually self-realized is not merely a theoretical claim or a mental adjustment; according to Śrīla Prabhupāda, it is a practical state of existence characterized by specific symptoms, behaviors, and a profound shift in vision. A truly self-realized soul is no longer bound by the bodily conception of life, manifesting full control over the senses and finding satisfaction in the bare necessities required to maintain the body. This stage, often identified as the brahma-bhuta platform, is the preliminary qualification for engaging in pure devotional service. The actually self-realized person sees beyond external designations of race, gender, or species, perceiving the spiritual equality of all living beings and the presence of the Supreme Lord within every heart.

  • Symptoms of Self-Control and Satisfaction: An actually self-realized person is defined by their ability to control the mind and senses. They are perfectly satisfied with the bare necessities of life and do not endeavor to gratify the senses, having found a higher taste in spiritual existence.
  • Transcendental Vision and Equality: One who has realized the self possesses a universal vision, seeing all living entities equally. They do not distinguish between human, animal, American, or Indian, but rather see the spirit soul within and treat every body as a temple of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  • The Gateway to Devotional Service: True bhakti, or devotional service, begins only when one is actually self-realized. While neophytes may engage in deity worship while maintaining bodily identification, the pure execution of service requires one to transcend the material concept of life.
  • Freedom from Lamentation and Fear: A primary symptom of this state is joyfulness (prasannatma). The self-realized soul does not lament for loss nor hanker for gain, and they are free from the fears associated with bodily maintenance and material duality.
