Theme Analysis

True advancement of civilization must be measured by spiritual vision, not by artificial comfort or expanded sense gratification. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that factories, skyscrapers, motorcars, weapons, and polished arrangements for eating, sleeping, mating, and defending do not solve the real problems of life. Real civilization means brahma-darśanam: understanding that the living being is spirit soul, part and parcel of the Supreme Spirit, and meant to return to Godhead. A society becomes civilized when it protects brāhmaṇas and cows, cultivates Kṛṣṇa consciousness, develops love for Kṛṣṇa, and gives people the chance to escape birth, death, old age, and disease. Without this aim, so-called advancement only increases anxiety, irreligion, exploitation, war, and forgetfulness of God.

  • Civilization Means Spiritual Vision: Advancement of civilization means brahma-darśanam, seeing the soul and the Supreme Spirit. Without this realization, people may build impressive cities but remain in the darkness of bodily consciousness.
  • Sense Gratification Is Not Progress: Modern advancement often means better arrangements for eating, sleeping, mating, and defending. Such activities are shared with animals and cannot be the measure of human civilization.
  • Kṛṣṇa Must Be the Center: Without Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa consciousness at the center, civilization cannot become beautiful or valuable. Kṛṣṇa consciousness gives the direction by which human life becomes truly progressive.
  • Real Civilization Protects Dharma: Brāhmaṇas and cows must be protected, and society must be trained to inquire about God. This spiritual structure gives people the opportunity to go back to Godhead.
