Theme Analysis

Affectionate mothers reveal how love naturally expresses itself through care, protection, nourishment, and sacrifice. Śrīla Prabhupāda shows that motherly affection can be ordinary and necessary within human society, but when centered on Kṛṣṇa it becomes a powerful form of devotional service. Mother Yaśodā, Devakī, Śacīmātā, and even Pūtanā's imitation of motherhood reveal how deeply the Lord responds to the mood of maternal affection.

  • Natural Motherly Care: A mother is naturally anxious for the welfare of her child and works to protect the child from disturbance. This affection is one of the tender foundations of family life and civilized human conduct.
  • Devotional Motherhood: Motherly affection becomes spiritually exalted when offered to Kṛṣṇa. In Mother Yaśodā and Devakī, concern for the Lord appears so intimate that His supreme opulence becomes covered by love.
  • The Lord's Mercy: Kṛṣṇa accepted even Pūtanā's false motherly gesture and awarded her a motherly position. This shows how the Lord magnifies even the smallest trace of service when it resembles devotion.
  • Renunciation and Higher Love: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu left behind the shelter of an affectionate mother to distribute love of God. Śacīmātā's sacrifice teaches that the highest affection helps the soul move toward Kṛṣṇa.
