Theme Analysis

Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that liberation is not the cessation of existence but the beginning of real life. Contrary to the impersonalist or voidist philosophy which suggests that activity stops after liberation, the Vaiṣṇava philosophy asserts that transcendental activity continues eternally. The soul is active by nature; therefore, it cannot remain idle. While some atomic souls may prefer to merge into the Brahman effulgence, the intelligent devotee enters the spiritual planets to render service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This state is called the brahma-bhūta stage, where one is free from material contamination and engages in pure devotional service. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that retaining one's individual identity after liberation is not a cause for fear but the basis for experiencing the highest spiritual bliss.

  • Activity vs. Void: Liberation does not mean becoming zero or inactive. Real, spiritual activity begins when material activities cease.
  • Continuity of Bhakti: The process of devotional service applies both in the conditioned state and the liberated state. As stated in the Vedānta-sūtra, bhakti continues even after liberation.
  • The Two Destinations: After liberation, one may merge into the impersonal Brahman effulgence (śānta-rasa) or enter the Vaikuṇṭha planets to associate directly with the Lord.
  • Overcoming Fear: Materialists fear retaining their personality after liberation because of their bitter experience with material bodies, but Śrīla Prabhupāda assures that spiritual individuality is full of bliss.
