Theme Analysis

A devotee's agitation must be understood according to its source: material disturbance is overcome, while spiritual emotion is purified and intensified in relation to Kṛṣṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that devotees remain steady amid reverses, passion, ignorance, wealth, and danger because their shelter is the Supreme Lord. Yet when the heart is moved by ecstatic love, humility, separation, or Kṛṣṇa's sweetness, agitation becomes a symptom of devotion rather than bondage.

  • Steady in Reverses: A devotee should not be materially agitated under any circumstances. Like a high mountain struck by rain, he remains humble and steady because his consciousness rests in the Lord.
  • Free From Passion: Attachment, hatred, wealth, and the modes of passion and ignorance do not control a mature devotee. Such steadiness comes from intelligence, shelter, and freedom from selfish agitation.
  • Ecstatic Emotion: Devotional agitation may appear as loud crying, laughter, humility, or intense absorption. When centered on Kṛṣṇa, such agitation is not weakness but the movement of love in the heart.
  • Kṛṣṇa's Sweetness: Kṛṣṇa can agitate the minds of His devotees through His flute, beauty, pastimes, and intimate dealings. This spiritual agitation deepens the relationship between the Lord and His devotees.
