Theme Analysis

In the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, ambition is not rejected but purified. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the living entity is eternally active and full of desires; therefore, one cannot artificially stop being ambitious. Instead, the material ambition for personal sense gratification must be transformed into the spiritual ambition (abhilāṣa) to serve Kṛṣṇa. This higher ambition is characterized by a lack of personal motivation and a willingness to serve the Lord under any circumstance—whether in heaven or hell. It culminates in the intense desire to assist the mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and to enter into the eternal family of Kṛṣṇa.

  • Purification of Desire: Ambition is a symptom of life; a stone has no ambition, but a living entity does. These desires must be purified so one can become ambitious for Kṛṣṇa rather than for material gain.
  • Unconditional Service: A devotee's ambition is not tied to a specific location or comfort. Like a soldier, the devotee goes wherever the service is required, even if it means descending into hellish conditions to preach.
  • Missionary Spirit: The highest ambition is to spread the glories of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and convince others of His supremacy, regardless of personal inconvenience.
  • Divine Association: The ultimate goal of this ambition is to enter Kṛṣṇa's family and associate with Him personally, following in the footsteps of the ācāryas and rāgānugā devotees.
