Theme Analysis

To be animalistic means to operate entirely within the bodily concept of life, completely ignoring the existence of the eternal spirit soul. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the modern world has mistakenly defined progress in terms of economic development and increased sense gratification. However, because these endeavors simply refine the basic activities of eating, sleeping, mating, and defending, they are entirely animalistic. A man without religion, who uses his higher intelligence merely to further these lower propensities, is fundamentally no different than a two-legged beast. The tragic irony of modern education is that it trains people exclusively for this animalistic lifestyle, leaving them utterly incapable of answering the most important questions of human existence: "Who am I? Why am I suffering?"

A significant theme in this category is the severe consequences of remaining in this degraded state. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that nature does not excuse a human being for living like an animal. Those who refuse to elevate their consciousness are subjected to immense suffering, including punishment in hellish planets like Mahāraurava. Furthermore, when an entire society becomes grossly animalistic, nature ultimately responds with total dissolution. To counteract this, Śrīla Prabhupāda presents the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement as the ultimate educational and purificatory institution. Through the chanting of the mahā-mantra (saṅkīrtana-yajña) and association with mahātmās (great souls), the dirty things accumulated in the heart over lifetimes of animalistic existence are cleansed, allowing true, enlightened human civilization to flourish.

  • The Bodily Concept: Believing that the self is the physical body is the foundation of the animalistic mentality. This ignorance prevents any true spiritual culture or understanding.
  • Misdirected Intelligence: Man is considered a "rational animal," but when he uses his rationality only to increase bodily comforts rather than seeking liberation, his education is purely animalistic.
  • The Failure of Economics: Despite vast economic development globally, society remains chaotic and deeply unhappy because people's dealings with one another are based on animalistic envy rather than spiritual equality.
  • The Supreme Cure: The only way to save human society from the dangers of animalism is to cleanse the heart through the systematic process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, specifically the chanting of the holy names.
